I saw this at the Resort Formerly Known as Badger Pass. It has been there before, and I think it belongs to an employee. No one was on the mountain this morning - another plus for quitting alcohol!

We have been taking the kids skiing for the last couple of years. I started at age 5, and was an excellent skiier in my teens and early 20s, but drifted away from the sport for a long time after that because money. When the kids were little, we could not afford ski vacations so we did not go.

It has been fun going with them, and my younger one actually let me give him some instruction this time

On the downside, Toby is sick. He has very bad diarrhea, and is struggling to keep his energy up. He is eating and drinking, but is not bugging me for breakfast as he ordinarily does. But he eats his meals when they are given.

We go home early tomorrow morning, and I have the day, so I am going to see if the vet can sneak him in. It is less than an hour and a half home.

I hope you all had a safe and Happy New Year. Thank you for making Oppositelock what it is. You all rule.

He looks concerned. Hopefully he just ate something(harmless) he shouldn’t, and this passes quickly!

What’s the altitude if that resort? That’s in Yosemite right? Probably pretty neat to be in the park this time of the year. I’d imagine it was mostly empty since most people would be crowding up Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, and Big Bear instead. Empty mountains are the best!

This is great, Badger Pass is where we took our kids skiing for the first time, I think the winter of 2009 . My son was 3 and my daughter was 5. What a great memory.

Poor Toby. He kinda looks stressed. Lets hope it’s nothing bad.

I feel you with the skiing.. Used to be quite ambitious and competitive in my teens but currently can’t afford to buy all the gear so I’m paused for a couple of years.

Are the kids on skies or snowboards?

New Year’s Day and the Super Bowl are my two favorite days of the year to go skiing.  You tend to get the mountain to  yourself on those days.

I had a ‘66 six cyl coupe in college and my neighbor bought a near twin which I’ve gotten the chance to drive. Crude, flexy, no handling and worse brakes is how I would describe it. Time makes the heart grow founder, but it’s hard to go back to old flings......

Aww, poor Toby. Hopefully he just ate something that doesn’t agree with him and it’s a quick fix.

Looks like a cute place to ski!

Looks great...there’s something to be said for small resorts. You don’t get separated for hours at a time and it’s a good place to practice without the pressure to want to try every run over hundreds of acres.

I used to snowboard a bit (lived in PA a couple years in my teens; plus a few trips to CO). But it gets expensive like you said. I’m dying to let the kids try it out soon, but the wife has zero interest — she tried it once as a teen and hated it.

Believe it or not, there is one ski resort in Alabama (more of a summer camp that happens to have a t-lift and basic snowmaking equipment). They’re open less than 10 days a year, sit at 1800', and have a drop of just 150' on the two runs. A couple days each year have actual, real snow — but when we get actual snow, the roads to get there are usually impassable. :D

I’m dying to try it out just to say I’ve done it. It’s the southernmost resort anywhere in the East.

We skied New Year’s Day, too. The weather was a bit interesting, and changed no fewer than 8 times in the 30 minute drive to the mountain from our house. Upon arrival, we went into the older of the two base lodges (the one we prefer anyway) and were greeted by two people. That is, there were TWO other people in the entire place. Typically on a Saturday, this space would fit ~150 people? That’s a guess, but still. It was glorious. Now, it’s not that I didn’t drink at all the night before, but my wife and I fell asleep on the couch at 9:00. Woke up to watch the clock change and went back to bed. Kids get up at 6:30 no matter what.
